Meeting Alex Singer for the first time gives me plenty of good reasons to be optimistic about the future.
The 29-year-old native of Portland, OR and now a proud resident of Las Vegas is running for a seat in the U.S. Congress, in Nevada’s highly-contested 3rd district. He’s one of six candidates in the already-crowded Democratic field. Republicans are fielding a similar number of candidates, making this into one of the most unpredictable races in the state.
I’ve been friends with Alex on social media ever since he announced his candidacy last year. I’d also seen him speak briefly at a political rally here in Las Vegas. However, until yesterday, we had never met face to face.
Alex and I spent an afternoon together and engaged in a conversation that was loaded with questions about why he’s running for office for the first time, where he stands on this issues, and whatever else popped into my mind during the discussion. Alex said there were no rules. Any question was on the table. We met at the Nacho Daddy bar, on West Sahara, in Summerlin. Alex was kind enough meet with me and allow the entire interview to be recorded.
Our interview (which is posted below in its entirety) lasted about 45 minutes. Warning: The sound quality would have been terrific had I not conducted the filming in an area where music was blasting. If you can block that out, the interview is remarkably revealing. Alex nails every question without stumbling, even hitting some of the curve balls I fired at him out of the park. He had no knowledge of the questions in advance (hell, I didn’t know what I was going to ask him!).
The Democratic primary is coming up on June 14th. Regardless of the outcome of that election, I came away with the impression we are seeing the emergence of a new generation of progressives which bodes very well for the future. Alex left me with a strong sense of optimism about the liberal movement here in Nevada and convinced me he’s going to be part of the political scene for a long time to come.
Please take a few minutes to learn more about Alex and the be sure and vote in the Democratic Primary, on June 14th.
